My style has definitely evolved since we moved into our house more than two years ago – it really is amazing how as you feel more settled in a house, you become more confident in your design decisions. I’ll share more about specifically what I’ve learned so far in a future post, but this post is all about a master bedroom refresh.
When I found the Threshold duvet cover at Target a few years ago, I loved it. It was different from what I would normally pick (as an Alabama fan, I tend to shy away from anything remotely orange – college football fans understand!) and I liked the grays and neutral background with the pops of color. I’ve kept the rest of the room neutral to not compete with the orange, but two years later, I’m finding I’m ready for a change. The current duvet has served me well, but I always figured the color would be wear on me one day and that’s definitely happened. Especially since I’ve completed the One Room Challenge and love that room so very much.
And, of course, nothing is as easy as swapping out the duvet and calling it a day. I still haven’t finished hanging anything above the bed, and some of the orange accessories will need to be swapped out or made over for the new direction I’m headed. Paint color (wheat bread by Behr) and furniture will remain the same, though the night stands may be refreshed. Below is my long term vision for the room:
I love navy blue and the idea of mixing it with some neutrals and aqua (another favorite color). Overall, the goal is to soften the tones a bit and play off the modern farmhouse/transitional look I have going in the rest of the house. This is no ORC – I have no intention of completing this within a given time frame. When time and money allow, I’ll work on executing the larger vision for the space.
The to-do list includes:
- New bedding: I love the MacKenna Duvet from Pottery Barn, and I’ve already purchased a quilt from Target in navy. While I save for the duvet cover, I’m planning to just reverse the current one – it has a neutral pattern on the other side so is a good temporary option.
- Wall decor: The big pieces needed for this room include something over the bed and two mirrors – one for each night stand. I’d like to do some sort of wood decor above the bed to pay off the current barn door. May shutters or something more ornate?
- Update/replace night stands: The current night stands are Ikea rast hacks. I’ll likely keep the one on my husband’s side with a fresh coat of paint and maybe some bling. On my side, I’m planning to bring in an old desk that can be used as a vanity too. It was a piece that was my mom’s and then my bedroom furniture growing up.
- Refresh overall styling/accessories: Truth be told, outside of the bench at the end of the bed, I haven’t bought much for this room since we moved in. But I’m looking forward to refreshing the styling, lamps, etc.
And for the most part, that’s it! I’ll share updates along the way as various projects get underway!

That bedding is fun and pops of tangerine seem to be very popular these days but I love the new look you are shooting for. It will be serene and beautiful. 🙂
Thanks so much for joining Thoughts of Home on Thursday. Pinning.

Oh I love tangerine! I just purchased a tangerine infused bedspread for one of our guest rooms and a tangerine lamp!
Your room is delightful:)

I like both – your current look and your plans! My husband (LSU fan) was about to buy a red golf bag a few days ago. My son whispered to me “Watch how fast I can get him to put that down….” Then my son admired the “Bama” golf bag. My husband dropped it quick!

Too funny! I love the combination of orange and navy, but I just can’t do it because of Auburn! though I bet many folks feel the same way about Houndstooth 🙂

You have done such a wonderful job of add color to the room while still creating a haven.
Sometimes that is hard to do.
This spring I have enjoyed adding touches of tangerine to my wardrobe-
now I need to look for a spot in my home.
Thank you for being at Thoughts of Home.
