Welcome to week 3 of the One Room Challenge, hosted by Calling It Home. Before we dive in to this week’s update, make sure to take a look at the progress from the featured designers this week, and all of the amazing (220+!) guest participants.
Well, it’s week three and not a lot of visible progress was made in the past week. The hubs and I headed out of town this past weekend to spend sometime with friends so there was little to no time spent in the laundry room. Except for measuring things – I measured A LOT. With limited weekend time, I’m hesitant to drag out all the paint supplies after work and live in a mess, but I think that’s going to need to happen. Check out my week one and week two for the plan and initial progress.
However, I did do a lot of online shopping for the room! In my mind, if everything is on site and I’m not waiting for deliveries, then I can still get it done. This week, I wanted to share some of the great finds for accessories in case you’re looking to update a hallway or laundry room too.
Towel Racks
I ended up purchasing two of these vertical towel racks from Ikea to use as drying racks in the laundry room closet. Since we are short on floor space, there is no room for a drying rack. Instead, I plan to go vertical so we can hang some clothes to dry. There were some really great wall mounted options as well from places like Wayfair, but we don’t have the wall width (thanks water heater!) to go that route.
Benches
I wanted to add a bench to the hallway to make better use of the “drop zone.” In my head, I envisioned a stained wood bench with metal legs, but most of the options I found were either too long or too wide. I need something less than 40 inches long to make sure the door from the garage has full range, and something less than 12 inches deep so it didn’t jut out into the hall too much. I loved this bench from Crate & Barrel, but it’s more than I wanted to spend. In the end, I bought this bench on Etsy. It’s scheduled to arrive next week and I hope it does!
Baskets
I was perusing the World Market website when they had their 30% off sale a few weeks ago and came across this rolling laundry cart. I loved the idea of adding a rolling laundry cart to our makeover. The white plastic laundry baskets we currently have always end up sitting in the hallway when we have laundry going. Instead, we can keep the rolling cart in the closet and roll it back and forth as needed. One of the benefits of a ranch-style house.
Again, size was an issue so I ended up going with the metal one from Container Store. I really loved the World Market one, but I was afraid it was going to be too wide to fit in the space we have. There were also some great options on Amazon and this one from West Elm is a show stopper, but way more than I think I’ll ever be willing to spend on a laundry basket. (And I never thought I’d be writing about how pretty laundry carts are!).
This weekend, the goals are:
- Paint walls, ceilings & trim
- Install new flooring
- Stain wood piece for the entry hallway
Here’s hoping to some pretty pics next Thursday!

Thanks, Jen! I’m pleased to report that the Container Store basket fits perfectly, and more importantly, my husband loves it as much as I do! I still laugh that we get so excited over things like laundry baskets 🙂

Thanks for the information. One of our future projects is a laundry closet. I really like your plan. The new lighting looks great. The Ikea towel racks would probably work in our space, too. Looking forward to seeing your finished ORC!
