Welcome to the One Room Challenge Week 3! In case you missed it, I’m turning a guest room into a gender neutral nursery. Catch up on weeks one and two before you dive in below. And make sure to visit the One Room Challenge blog where you can see all the updates from the featured and guest participants.
Room Update & Plan
As a reminder, below is the mood board I’m working from. I will admit there isn’t a ton of progress, but the room is starting to (slowly) come together).
The good news is that we did get the rug and rug pad down. I thought I’d walk you through a few of the various rug options I considered for the room.

First, I purchased a custom size rug pad from RugPadUSA.com. I splurged and bought
Rug Criteria
Before purchasing, I defined what I wanted in a rug. My criteria included:
- Durable, easily cleanable and hides stains – this is a nursery after all!
- Some sort of pattern or texture – given how neutral the room is, I really wanted to add some visual interest on the floor
- Soft and comfortable – again, lots of time on the floor
- Needed to fill as much of the room as possible (more on that in a minute)
Rug Options
Option 1: Wall-to-Wall carpet
This was my initial thought. The hardwood floors in here (and the other guest room) are from the previous owners and they don’t match what we installed during the initial renovation. Rather than spend $$$ to replace the floors to match, and then still need a large rug, I thought doing wall-to-wall was a good option. However, in the end, we decided it against it for a few reasons, the main one being allergies. Wall-to-wall also didn’t meet the criteria of pattern. I looked at subtle patterns, but in my mind, I still needed a rug for more pattern and that drives the cost up even more. Eventually, we’ll replace the floors to match the rest of the house, but for now, we left as-is.
Option 2: Pattern Rug in Soft Colors
This was the option I really wanted. I looked at three main rugs for this option, which I’ll share below. But the ultimate challenge was
- Ballard Devlin Tufted Rug (on sale right now!)
- Safavieah Traditional Rug via Amazon
- Threshold Vintage Distressed rug via Target – this is the rug you see in the mood board. Sadly, the 7×10 is too small and the 10×12 is too large so it didn’t work for me.
Option 3: Indoor/Outdoor Rug
I’ve had mixed success using indoor/outdoor rugs inside the house. Our large living room rug is from Ballard and is easily cleaned and durable (as confirmed by the multiple dog vomit situations). However, it’s not super soft so not great for a nursery.
Same goes for the entryway rug. Incredibly durable and stain resistant, but not super soft.
In our bedroom, I used a softer indoor/outdoor rug and it did not hold up well. It completely faded within 5 years of purchase and was incredibly difficult to clean.
Luckily, I found a rug on RugsUSA.com that seemed to fit the criteria. The size is 11′ 6″ x 8′ 6″, so slightly bigger than an 8×10, but still fit the room. The reviews were great and there are lots of pictures in the reviews with the rug in a nursery or playroom. It has texture and some color variation so falls in between wall-to-wall and a heavier pattern. And the price was right too.
Time will tell if it holds up to wear and tear!
The crib mattress comes this week, so hoping to get the crib assembled this weekend and possibly hang the art and curtain rods. And fingers crossed the sofa makes it back in time for the reveal!
