Welcome back! It’s time again for the One Room Challenge, hosted by Calling It Home – where featured and guests bloggers fully makeover a room within six weeks. Make sure to hop over the the link party and check out all the amazing bloggers participating in the season’s ORC. Each Thursday, check back here for an update on my progress in our laundry room and garage entry! This will be an interesting one. For the previous challenge, I was able to pretty much do everything myself, with some help from the hubs. The laundry room involves much bigger projects than paint so I’ll be calling in some pros to help – which can also mean that I might not have as much control over the timeline as I want.
Inspiration
My love of navy continues. The idea is to make the laundry room both functional and pretty. Fresh paint, new cabinets, open shelving, etc. Below is a collage of some inspiration that I’ll use as a guide. A touch modern farmhouse and touch industrial but keeping in tune with the rest of the house.
Planning
I am so incredibly embarrassed to show you the pictures of the current hallway and laundry closet. But I hope that the after in 6 weeks will make up for the before! Before we jump into some really ugly photos, below is a pretty palate cleanser.
Ok, now that you are prepared for the worst, let’s take a tour. Below is the view looking down the hall towards the kitchen. The garage door is on the left. On the right, the first door is a hall closet (which received a makeover a year or so ago), and the bi-fold doors on the right hold the washer and dryer. Plus our water heater. Yea, that’s going to be fun. We can’t change the layout or anything, but I think fresh paint, new lighting, a new rug and a bench will do wonders for this space.
This is the opposite direction. We hung this coat rack that the previous owners left and it serves as the landing spot for most of my stuff. I don’t know how or why I have so many bags, but between purses, lunch boxes, gym bags and laptop bags, this space is always full. The idea is to run a rustic wood plank the length of the wall and add more hooks for additional storage. There will also be a small bench, with baskets underneath.
And now the really bad stuff. This is what the laundry closet currently looks like (or did until I cleaned it out this past weekend). The white baskets are my attempt to keep it somewhat organized, but it just always looks messy. The storage is great, but there are almost too many shelves. The wire shelving is going away, and will be replaced with open shelving and a cabinet. Oh, and to make things even more fun, our electrical panel is located in here.
And here’s the other side. And the water heater. I have thoughts on how to maybe hide it somewhat but am very open to suggestions if you have any! There are way too many cleaning tools in here as well (do Swiffer dusters multiply for you too? Just me?). I plan to trim these down to the ones I actually use, and the others will either go to Goodwill or garage storage. I’m fairly certain this is the original linoleum too. Planning to cover that up with some vinyl planks 🙂
One last fun thing. This is the current light fixture. With unpainted ceilings. The popcorn came down during the kitchen renovation, but we never got around to painting the ceilings in any of the closets. I can’t wait to not have a bare bulb hanging from the ceiling!
As you can see, there is lots of work to do. The goal this week is to take down the wire shelving, schedule the electrician and decide on cabinets/paint colors. And with that, I’ll leave you with the one thing (other than the washer and dryer) that is staying in the space. We do love our pups!
