(Please note that I was in no way compensated for this post – Move Loot has no idea who I am. This is my honest opinion of a new app that I used for a personal purchase.)
I love consignment, flea market and antique shopping and really enjoy finding the right piece for my house. When we moved into to our current house, we went from a little over 600 sq. feet to more than 2,000 so we needed a lot of new furniture to fill the space. I was on a budget so buying used pieces became the main way I furnished and decorated our house. However, when you don’t own an SUV, it makes it difficult to buy large pieces of furniture and get them home without spending extra money. So while I might find an amazing dining room table at the Ballard’s Outlet, or a beautiful buffet at an antique shop, I then would have to spend an extra $50-$80 on hiring someone to deliver the piece to my house. Or, make 3 trips to the consignment store and back for 6 dining room chairs (thanks hubby!). Fast forward to hearing about an app called Move Loot, where you buy consignment online. I downloaded the app and started browsing.
What I liked about the app, is that unlike Craig’s List or some others, it all goes through Move Loot as the 3rd party. No meeting someone you in a parking lot somewhere or dealing in cash. And, if you spend more than $95 on an order, delivery is FREE. I was on the hunt for a dresser that would serve as a new TV stand (inspired by this post and this one). I was looking for a few specifics due to the space I was working with. The dresser couldn’t be longer than 60 in, and since a TV was going to be on top of it, I didn’t really want it higher than 30 in or wider than about 18. And, I wanted enough space underneath to be able to put the cable box and DVD player on the floor. I wanted at least 6 drawers for storage, and knowing I was going to paint it white, I wanted something on the lighter side so prepping for paint would be easier.
One thing I loved about Move Loot was that all the dimensions were listed – it was very easy to check and see what would work and what wouldn’t. Unfortunately, I also learned the hard way that when you see something that you like, you need to buy it – much like anywhere else where things are discounted, be it Home Goods, Goodwill or your local flea market. I found several dressers that I liked, only to pause on my decision and then when I went back to purchase, it was gone. The downside of Move Loot is that you can’t negotiate like you can in-person or even on Facebook/Craig’s List. The price is what it is and I did find some pieces on the high side. For example, I saw the same buffet that I bought at a local consignment for about $200 more than I paid for it.
But, one early morning as I was starting my workout at 5:45 a.m., I found a really cute dresser while I was browsing waiting for my workout DVD to start (I do my best online deal shopping in the early morning – no joke). It wasn’t perfect, but fit the criteria I needed and the price of $125 was just right! I liked the vintage look and figured I could change the handles if needed. With a few taps on my phone, the dresser was mine!
The buying process was easy and initially, it was supposed to be delivered the following Sunday after buying on a Friday morning. But… on Sunday I got an email saying that item hadn’t made its way to the warehouse and I needed to choose a new delivery date. That was kind of a bummer because I had company coming in town and was hoping to get it done before they came. I chose a new date, but it was 5 days later, but still isn’t too bad all things considered. The following Friday afternoon, the truck showed up and delivered by new dresser!
Overall, I’d say I had a good experience on Move Loot and would definitely do it again. While it’s fun to browse and hunt in-person (and there are some things I’d just rather buy after seeing it in person), this was super convenient. I don’t always have time to check the local shops every week so this was a great alternative.
Soon, I’ll share the full update on how I re-finished the dresser! Our TV is currently sitting on top of it and *this close* to finishing the living room wall!
