Two weeks ago, I shared a few potential design boards for my mom’s master bedroom makeover. Below is the one that we decided to move forward with – Bold & Beautiful. She really liked the colors in this one, and the idea of a keeping the pattern in the curtains and accessories, with more neutral bedding. She also has a lot of matte brass and gold in her home, so the green plays nicely with some of the existing accessories she has.
Before Pictures & To-Do List
There’s a good bit of work to do in the room, but the transformation will be worth it. Below is our to-do list, and some pictures of the space how it looks today.
- Paint the walls: The old two-tone rag treatment will change to Hazy Skies by Benjamin Moore.
- Replace the carpet: We looked at some carpet samples a few weeks ago and chose something similar to what she has now, but with more variation. Hopeful it doesn’t show as many stains as the current one!
- Updated bedding: Neutral bedding, with but some texture is the goal (to hide stains!)
- New furniture: The two nightstands at the end of the bed are going, and a new bench will take its place. We may also replace one of the night stands as it’s a little small for the lamp.
- Wall decor: While we both like the hydrangea print that’s hanging now, we’re not sure if it will work with the new decor. If not, we’ll look for something else. The opposite wall will feature a few mirrors, potentially the Ballard ones in the design board.
- Window treatments: We may or may not keep the current rods, but excited to see the bold pattern on the wall with the curtains.
- Rug: We’re thinking about adding an 8×10 rug under the bed in a jute or sisal to bring another subtle patter into the room.
- Pillows/throws: While my dad isn’t a fan of throw pillows (really, what man is?), they agreed to no more than three on the bed (there was negotiation involved).
- Accessories: My mom already has some great pieces, so we’ll likely supplement here and there. Also planning to add a big basket for the throw pillows since I know they won’t make it on the bed often 😉
- Lighting: With no overhead lighting, lamps are key. A new floor lamp will be added, and possibly a new lamp on the dresser.
What’s staying?
- Furniture: For now, we’re going to keep the same big pieces – the dresser & armoire, but they will get a fresh coat of paint.
- The bedside lamps: These were my grandmother’s and they are fantastic. The green and gold lamps are really what inspired the room.
- Bed: The current king size bed is staying – we toyed with the idea of painting it, but for now, planning to leave as-is.
- Layout: The current layout works really well for the space. It’s not a huge master bedroom and keeping the bed in this spot makes the room appear larger. The bed moved around a lot over the years to find the best spot!
I’ll make sure to share updates along the way. The room is being painted this week so I should have more to share soon.
