We are making progress in my mom’s master bedroom, with lots and lots of paint! The walls were painted last week – Hazy Skies by Benjamin Moore. Over Labor Day weekend, I headed up there to give the big pieces of furniture a makeover. If you need a reminder of what the furniture looked like before, take a look at the planning post for the room.
Before
We chose Annie Sloan Chalk paint in Cocoa for the makeover. We wanted to lighten up the furniture, but didn’t want to go with any white or anything too light. After removing the drawers, and giving everything a light sanding, I got to work. The biggest challenge is that the pieces had a pretty deep wood grain – possibly faux, but I couldn’t really tell. Because of the texture and various colors in the wood grain, I did two coats in most areas and three coats in some.
For the hardware, we were thinking of spray painting a matte black, but before we did that, we decided to try and clean it first. Keep in mind that the original hardware looked like it was oil rubbed bronze in color. After trying some soap and water that didn’t do anything, we tried some Bar Keeper’s friend. And what a difference! Turns the hardware is likely solid brass and cleaned up beautifully. No need to spray paint these!
After letting the two coats dry, I sealed with using Valpsar furniture wax – this is the wax that I’ve used on all my chalk-painted pieces. It has a lot of room for error and is really easy to use. From there, we put the furniture back together! By the way, to paint these two huge pieces, I used probably 1/3 to a 1/2 of a quart of paint. Yes, chalk paint is more expensive ($35 for a quart), but it goes a really long way.
Late last week, the carpet company came and installed new carpet. The room is starting to come together! Next up will be curtains and bedding, and we have our eyes on these lamps from Target. Making progress!
