This year, I’m trying really hard not to go overboard on Christmas decorations and use what I have, or at least, be very frugal. I thought it would fun to chronicle this adventure, so each Friday leading up to the week before Christmas, I’ll share a thrifty find, Christmas craft or some homemade decor. It can be hard not to want to run out and buy something new when I see something I love online. There’s so much great inspiration out there, but it can easy to compare yourself and get hung up in thinking you have to be as good as, or better than someone one else (at least for me!). I’m looking forward to the challenge of coming up with new ways to use old things and to be as conservative as possible with my budget.
One of the best design tips that I’ve learned from other home bloggers is that changing out your throw pillows is an easy, cost effective way to update seasonal decor. However, throw pillows can get expensive very fast if you’re buying several at one time – even at Homegoods, where the pillows usually range $15-$25/piece, that starts to add up if you’re buying 5 to 6 (or more!) per season. I love that Life on Virginia Street makes her own and I’m hoping to give that a shot in the new year (a sewing machine is on my Christmas list – I sewed as a tween, but haven’t done it in years; hoping it’s like riding a bike and will come back to me?). For now though, I’ve been adding in some pillow covers to switch up the look. For fall, I found some cute plaid ones at Ikea (mentioned in this post) and I wanted to get a few more for Christmas.
While I love pillows, I don’t really have the room to store too many so I love the idea of pillow covers! So much easier to store than actual pillows and I just re-use the interior cushions each time. After doing some searching online, I came across H&M’s Holiday Decor. First, I had no idea that H&M had home decor and second, it was so affordable! Pillow covers ranged from $4.99 to 15.99 and things like towels, tablecloths, etc. were a great price too.
My husband isn’t on board with Christmas decor before Thanksgiving (though I’m trying to convince him since we’re not hosting Thanksgiving this year!), but I did manage to sneak in two new pillow covers and a cute postage pillow I picked up at Ross for $7.99. Ross isn’t my favorite, but it’s very affordable and for items like seasonal decor, I don’t need something to be super high quality.
What’s your favorite way to be frugal and festive with Christmas decor?
