While I do think the occasional splurge is worth it, much of my decor is thriftier finds. I mean, who doesn’t love a great deal? I think one thing we all struggle with though is making sure you’re not just buying it because the price is too good to pass up – think about where you’re going to put it, if you’re going to wear it and for how long you’ll love it. What is the value you’ll get out of the item compared to how much you’re spending?
On that topic, I loved this blog post from Erin Spain of DIY on the Cheap on her thoughts on where to spend and where to splurge. It’s a great read.
And on to Frugal Friday!
- Upholstered Dining Room Chairs from Wal-Mart: I’ve been searching
everywhere for two more upholstered dining room chairs to flank either side of the buffet, but I’m having a hard time justifying the spend. I want a specific look, but since these are essentially accent chairs that will get used only a few times per year, it doesn’t really make sense to invest a high dollar amount when there are so many other things I’d rather have (see the note above re: deal vs. value). These seem like a great option and they come totally assembled! Plus, the Wal-Mart is around the corner so it wouldn’t be a huge pain to return them if I had to.
- Area Rug from Overstock.com: We have two dogs in our house, one of whom loves to roll all over the rugs and to wipe his face on the rugs after he eats. It just doesn’t make sense for us to spend more than needed on an area rug. I searched high and low for a rug for the master bedroom when we were doing
our renovation and finally found this one on Overstock for $214. I needed 8×10 since we have a King bed; the ones I typically like from Target weren’t large enough (most of those are 7×10). The Amherst rug in light gray is indoor/outdoor, but feels like a normal rug and has held up well so far.
- Decorative Spheres from Hobby Lobby: I love Hobby Lobby for affordable home accents. I wanted an object of some sort for the coffee table/ottoman and right now, all of their spheres are 50% off! I bought the blue metal one to sit on top of a book & tray.
- Pixie Pants from Old Navy: If you work in a business casual environment, especially one that keeps the AC on the chilly side (like me!), you can’t beat Old Navy’s Pixie Pants. I seriously love these for work – I own four pairs. They do shrink some and I go a size up so they aren’t too tight, but for short girls like me (I’m 5’4 on a good day) these hit my ankle perfectly. Long enough to wear heels, but short enough I can wear flats too. And they have such fun fall patterns!
What deals have you found lately? Anything on your wish list that you’ve been stalking until it goes on sale?
