I had been wanting two more chairs for our dining room to flank the buffet and use as extra seating for when we put the leaf in the dining room table, but I was having a really hard time pulling the trigger on actually purchasing the chairs. Even though I found some that were really economical (around $110/piece), I struggled to justify the cost for chairs that we would only actually use a few times per year. We also seemed to either having fewer than 6 people or more than 10 whenever we hosted a dinner so there was also no urgency in purchasing more chairs.
That is, until October, when we had exactly 8 people coming for my dad’s birthday. I decided to run by a local consignment store and see if they had anything I liked, and if not, I’d borrow two chairs from my mom for the dinner. I found these cute wicker parsons chairs that were surprisingly really comfortable – the back was a little lower than I’d wanted, but overall, I figured they would work. Plus, they’d been at the store for a while so they were deeply discounted; for $40 a piece, I took my new chairs home.
As comfortable as they were, I didn’t love the color of them so while I was painting the new dresser for the TV Stand in the living room, I did the same with some chalk paint and the chairs. I purchased some cream-colored chalk paint from another consignment shop around the corner. It’s more of a booth set-up and there are a few booths that feature different types of furniture paint – it was way closer and more convenient than trekking somewhere to purchase Annie Sloan so I went with it. I did two coats of cream, but decided it looked too flat on the wicker. I took some of the Valspar Kid Gloves white and dry brushed over the wicker, but it was still missing something. Finally, after two coats of Valspar clear wax, I did a very light coat of dark wax to give it more of a weathered look.
I’m still not sure I’m in love, but I definitely like it better than the orange color of the original chairs. And at least now I have some extra seating! Here’s a picture of the chairs with our dining room decorated for Christmas.
Have you ever chalk painted wicker furniture? What was your result?
